"As a cure for worrying, work is better than whiskey..."

  • Thomas Edison

The quote above is attributed to the inspirational American inventor, Thomas Edison. I would argue that Edison was very likely one of the single most important figures in modern history. Most famously, he invented the light-bulb and was one of the first to put in place distributed electricity generation to power that invention, but he also made enormous contributions to the development of recorded music, photography, the motion picture and a great deal else besides. He literally helped drag humanity out of the darkness - a metaphor for human progress if there ever was one.

I mention this only to support the idea that he might be someone worth listening to. So Edison suggested that working is better than drinking when confronted with life's troubles.

It probably goes without saying that, so far, 2020 has been a year with its fair share of worries for many people. If the evidence is anything to go by - this has had a big impact on the "whiskey" side of Edison's quote.

A recent article from The Independent highlights that as many as 250,000 Britons are drinking before midday, and that "Most Britons are drinking more during the coronavirus lockdown..."

Finance is a source of stress for too many people...

But it isn't just CV-19 that people are worried about this year. We are all painfully aware of just how dreadful an impact this current crisis has had on jobs and the economy as a whole. Many people are suffering real economic distress...

...and even before this became our new reality, the evidence is that many people find finance to be a very particular source of stress and worry. As I say on the back cover of my new book:

Research shows that as many as 75% of people in the UK worry about their financial situation.

In America, 25% of people say they worry about money 'all the time'.

...both of these quotes are taken from pieces that were published some time before this year. Presumably the problem is even worse at the moment?

What can we do to help with this?

Sadly - there isn't much that I or the Plain English Finance team can do about the coronavirus situation - not directly at least - but I feel pretty strongly that we can help with worries that might concern your finances.

The single most effective way that we do this is through our live and interactive “How to Own the World” Community.

I believe that our Community is the most effective tool we have to help you actually take the steps required to make a huge difference to you wealth and to your peace of mind.

Maximise the chance you take action

There is a great deal of evidence that the best way to ensure you take action in any area of your life is to surround yourself with other people on the same journey as you.

Just as with going to the gym or learning any new skill – accountability is key. We humans are social animals and tend to make far more forward progress in our lives when we are on a journey with a group or team than if we try to go it alone.

Over the years, I have written two books and we have also made a tonne of information freely available in the Press sections of our website.

This is all great - but one thing we have learnt from people in that time is that information alone will only get you so far. Far more important for people to actually get the RESULT they want for their finances, is to maximise their chances of taking necessary ACTION - "work, not whiskey" as it were...

This is why we created our online Community. It is an ongoing source of financial education, inspiration and the accountability that goes hand in hand with being part of a group of like-minded individuals on a similar journey.

Free copy of my new book

I would also like to highlight that when you join – you are given a free digital copy of my new workbook “Live on Less, Invest the Rest…” (You can download a free sample to get an idea of what the new book is all about).

"Live on less..." gives you a common-sense way of thinking about how to get your finances sorted, and a roadmap of specific actions you might take…

(By the way - If you are the sort of person who prefers a print version of a book - there is a promotional code at the back of the print version that is available on Amazon that will give you three months free membership of the Community - if you prefer to do it that way round)...

The real value in joining the group, however, is in the interactivity – in your ability to ask questions and to contribute. By virtue of being a member – you get direct access to me and other members of the Plain English Finance team, but also to a phenomenal “brain trust” of hundreds of like-minded people on a similar journey.

“I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am to be part of the Community. It has not only helped my knowledge on investing and planning for my future, but it has also completely changed my mindset towards finance, wealth management and my daily spending habits. Andrew and the guys will always come back and give wonderful advice on any question you may have no matter how silly they may seem.”
— Callum K. Community Member.

You also get access to a tonne of valuable content past, present and future. Given that the group has been around for a few years now, there is a large existing body of content covering a very wide range of topics that members can search on their own time.

“The sheer depth of knowledge offered by other members is astounding. Then, the resources available on top. Truly excellent group.”
— Daniel H. Community Member.

Most important of all, however, you get confidence in your ability to save and invest successfully. We know that this can bring enormous peace of mind and a real sense of achievement and is one of life’s most important “to-do items” finally sorted…

Membership of our Community costs just £5 a month.

We genuinely believe that this could well be the best value group of its kind in the UK market. There are plenty of unregulated trading groups out there which can cost hundreds of pounds a month. The best investment newsletters can cost several hundred pounds a year.

Our belief is that we offer exceptional value for money (not least when you consider you get a digital copy of my new book of course). The group is all about real financial education and long-run investment – not get rich quick day-trading. We think that this is the best approach for the vast majority of people when it comes to money and investment.

If you want to do the "work" that might get rid of any "worry" that you might have about your finances, please do join us and we hope that you will find that you agree!

You can find all the detail you need and instructions on how to join on the Community page of our website.

Please note: With apologies to our many overseas subscribers, because we are authorised and regulated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority, our Community is only available to UK residents at present. A UK postal address is required to join.

“Any question you ask in the group is answered by many and everyone is always happy to help. I love that Andrew also answers most questions, on a lot of other groups, you hardly ever hear from the main man/woman.”
— Laura G. Community Member.
