I'm writing today to share a webinar I did a few weeks ago for our "How to Own the World Community"

If you've been reading these articles for a while, you may know that we are pretty honoured to work with two leading finance Professors - Andrew Clare and Steven Thomas of the The Business School (formerly Cass), City, University of London. As a reminder of who they are:

01. Professor Steve Thomas -- 02. Professor Andrew Clare

01. Professor Steve Thomas

Steve is Professor of Finance at The Business School and Associate Dean of their MBA programme. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting and in a 2006 review was ranked 11th in Europe for finance research. Since 1988, He has been consulting editor of a range of credit publications for the FT and Interactive Data. Steve is also an examiner for the Investment Management Certificate of the CFA UK and author of the accompanying Official Training Manual - that is to say that he is one of the people who sets the exams for a decent chunk of the sophisticated end of the UK finance industry!

02. Professor Andrew Clare

Andrew is the Professor of Asset Management at The Business School. He was previously a Senior Research Manager in the Monetary Analysis wing of the Bank of England supporting the work of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and the Financial Economist for Legal and General Investment Management (LGIM) prior to that. Andrew sits on the board of L&G Unit Trust Managers, is co-author of “The Trustee Guide to Investment” and in a survey published in 2007, was ranked as the world's ninth most prolific finance author of the past fifty years. He serves on the investment committees of corporate pension schemes worth several billion pounds.

A few weeks ago they were kind enough to give us an hour of their time to conduct a webinar for members of our online Community.

The webinar was primarily focused on explaining the thinking and strategy behind our fund. That having been said - I do like to think that we covered a great deal that should be of more general interest to anyone thinking about finance and investment.

Specifically, topics included:

  • The nuts and bolts of how the fund works.
  • The merits of true diversification and basic trend following - and the clear evidence for both.
  • The advantages of only trading once a month.
  • Reasons not to use "hard" stop losses in longer-term strategies.
  • Whether or not there is an "ETF bubble" - and whether we should worry about that.
  • The impact coronavirus might have on financial markets.
  • Why many hedge fund strategies are unlikely to work for "normal" folk.
  • The challenge record-low interest rates causes investors at the moment.
  • Why it is particularly important to side-step volatility particularly as you approach retirement.
  • What to do if you care about ESG (Environmental, Social and corporate Governance).
  • Why "pound cost-averaging" really does work over time.
  • The most important investment theme of them all: Human progress.
  • How important it is to ignore the news when investing long term!
  • The crucial importance of financial literacy (hence the line about us being "three men on a mission"!)...
  • Whether we should think about things like renewable energy, AI or gaming.

...quite a lot else besides.

I think it is fair to say that Andrew and Steve had a great deal of wisdom to impart but please do check it out if you can find the time to see if you agree. If you have any interest in investment at all, I'd like to think that you might find it time well spent.
